David Cubitt was born in England, but his creative passport belongs to the Canadian industry. In 1993 he broke into mainstream film with Alive, the survival chronicle in the Andes directed by Frank Marshall. He played Fito Strauch during a shoot that demanded real physical endurance due to the weather conditions.
That start showed his ability to play characters who hold their ground under pressure.
In the late 1990s, his name became linked to television success with Traders. The series explored the world of finance and earned him a Gemini Award in 1997. Cubitt realized early on that television allowed for a depth of character arc that film of the era often ignored.
And the gamble paid off.
His face became familiar in productions that crossed the border between Canada and the United States. He appeared in Ali in 2001 alongside Will Smith and under the direction of Michael Mann. It was a brief but intense foray into prestige cinema that taught him the pace of Hollywood's major leagues.
In 2005, he accepted the role of Detective Lee Scanlon in Medium. He spent seven seasons alongside Patricia Arquette in a show that averaged multimillion-viewer audiences. A seven-year contract gave him the financial stability he needed to start choosing projects based purely on artistic merit.
Scanlon's character was the anchor of reality in a supernatural plot.
But the end of the series in 2011 did not slow down his work. Cubitt specialized in roles with authority or a shady past. In 2014 he appeared in Seventh Son and shortly after in Stonewall, proving he could jump from epic fantasy to historical drama without missing a beat.
After Medium ended, the actor sought roles with less exposure but greater dramatic weight. He joined The Colossal Failure of the Modern Relationship in 2015, a black comedy shot at Niagara Falls. It was a necessary change of pace to avoid being typecast in police roles.
In 2020, he joined the cast of Virgin River to bring Calvin to life.
He played a complex antagonist in one of the most-watched series on Netflix. The production was shot in British Columbia, allowing him to work close to home. Between 2017 and 2021 he also appeared in genre series such as Van Helsing and Siren. In the latter, he played Ted Pownall.
People often forget that Cubitt has also worked as an executive producer. In 2013 he got involved in developing independent content to better control shooting schedules and script quality. His filmography exceeds 90 titles across film and television since his professional debut.
The syndication deal for Medium is still generating residual income in 2024.
