Hill Harper didn't start his career on a film set but in the classrooms of Harvard. There he crossed paths with Barack Obama while studying law and earning a master's degree in public administration. Most of his classmates were looking for prestigious jobs at big-city firms. He chose to move to Los Angeles to try to carve out a place for himself as an actor.
It was a risky decision.
In 1993, he landed a small role on the series Married… with Children. It wasn't the dream debut for an Ivy League graduate, but it helped pay the bills while Spike Lee crossed his path. The director cast him in Get on the Bus in 1996, and that project changed his visibility in the industry.
He appeared in He Got Game in 1998 alongside Denzel Washington. That shoot helped him realize his look suited roles with a strong intellectual edge. But independent film doesn't always guarantee the financial stability needed in California.
Television gave him the security that Hollywood had been doling out only sparingly. In 2004, he accepted the role of Dr. Sheldon Hawkes on CSI: NY. Over nine seasons, he played a medical examiner who eventually made the leap to fieldwork as a detective.
And the gamble paid off for 197 episodes.
The series allowed him to fund his other personal interests. He published Letters to a Young Brother in 2006 with the goal of offering tools for success to young African Americans. The book received several NAACP awards and moved him away from the purely acting circuit.
Harper didn't want to be just a familiar face on the small screen. He bought a chain of coffee shops in Detroit called Roasting Plant Coffee to put his business management knowledge to use. For him, acting was always part of a much bigger plan.
After the New York franchise wrapped, he joined the cast of Covert Affairs in 2013 and later The Good Doctor in 2017. On the latter, he played Dr. Marcus Andrews for six full seasons. His exit from the medical drama had nothing to do with contract issues or the character growing tired.
In July 2023, he announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate for the state of Michigan.
He decided to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Senator Debbie Stabenow. This decision forced him to leave behind his television salary to focus on an election campaign built around economic justice. But American politics demands a time commitment that doesn't allow for fourteen-hour shooting days.
The 2024 election campaign marked his definitive exit from the cast of The Good Doctor after appearing in 114 episodes. The actor officially submitted his resignation to the production company ABC on November 20, 2023.
