John Larroquette was paid a bag of marijuana to provide the voiceover at the beginning of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in 1974. It was a personal favor to director Tobe Hooper. That young man from New Orleans had no idea that his baritone voice would become the backbone of one of American television's longest-running comedies.
And he did it without appearing on screen.
Before landing on sets in Los Angeles, he worked as a radio DJ. That stage of his life built his ability to command authority with words. But his real break came in 1984 when he accepted the role of Dan Fielding on the series Night Court.
Fielding was a narcissistic prosecutor with an obsession for sex. Larroquette gave him a pathetic humanity that immediately captivated critics. He won four Emmy Awards in a row between 1985 and 1988 for this role.
That was when something unprecedented happened in the industry. He asked the Academy to stop nominating him. He felt the character was overshadowing his colleagues' work and that Fielding's story needed to end emotionally for him.
Sobriety set the pace of his work from February 1982 onward. This personal decision laid the groundwork for his next major project in 1993. In The John Larroquette Show, the lead was a recovering alcoholic who ran a bus station in St. Louis.
The scripts tackled raw subject matter. The tone was too bitter for audiences of the time, and NBC pushed for creative changes to soften the storyline. They wanted something like Cheers, and that interference diluted the essence of the series until its cancellation in 1996.
The system devoured the bet.
Larroquette found his niche in top-tier supporting roles. In 2007 he joined Boston Legal to play Carl Sack. His presence provided a serious counterpoint to the eccentricities of the leads and proved that his stage presence remained intact after decades at the forefront.
In 2011 he made his Broadway debut in the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He shared the stage with Daniel Radcliffe and won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Larroquette is one of the few actors who has the most prestigious awards in both television and theater on his shelf.
In 2014 he joined the cast of The Librarians as Jenkins. That role let him explore the fantasy genre over four full seasons. The actor has always preferred the security of a good script to constant media exposure.
His return to his most famous character came in 2023. This new chapter of Night Court casts him as a defense attorney instead of a prosecutor. The per-episode salary on this production reflects his status as an untouchable veteran.
In the original contract for the 1974 film, his name didn't even appear in the final credits. It was a very low-budget production that grossed 30 million dollars in its first year.
