Synopsis of Night Court

Night Court follows the night shift at a criminal court in Manhattan, where urgent cases are resolved in a hurry. Presiding over it is Judge Harry Stone, a 33-year-old magistrate who runs hearings with jokes and magic tricks. He is joined by Dan Fielding, a narcissistic prosecutor and sex addict who would do anything to get a woman into bed, and Christine Sullivan, a explosive but naive defense attorney. Rounding out the cast is Bull Shannon, a huge bailiff with childlike behavior. Eccentric defendants pass through the courtroom, and the team tries to get its work done amid rivalries and antics. The series, created by Reinhold Weege and aired on NBC, turns the routine of a night court into a sitcom.

Trivia about Night Court

John Larroquette won four consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series between 1985 and 1988, and in 1989 withdrew his name from contention.
The laugh heard after the final credits belongs to Chuck Weege, the creator's father, who attended almost every taping of the show in person.
In 1984, Shelley Hack of Charlie's Angels was hired to play Christine Sullivan, but she and the producer agreed she would not continue on the show.
The opening theme played in an episode of Family Guy's fifth season, with animations of former President Bill Clinton playing the saxophone.
The show's theme was sampled for the remix of 1998 by Cam'Ron's single Horse & Carriage, featuring Big Pun and Wyclef Jean.
Florence Halop, the bailiff in the show's third season, died of lung cancer in 1986, the same disease that had claimed her predecessor, Selma Diamond.
The follow-up to "Night Court" premiered in 2023 with John Larroquette reprising the role of Dan Fielding. It was renewed for a second and third season, but NBC canceled it in May 2025 after three seasons.
