John M. Jackson did not start his career in front of a camera. Before moving to New York to try his hand at acting, he taught History and Geography at a high school in Texas. He was born in 1950, and his life seemed tied to sports after his time on the American football team at the University of Texas at Austin. But the classroom soon felt too small.
It was a blind bet.
In 1980 he landed his first professional role in the film Out of the Blue. It wasn't a leading role, but it helped him realize that his look fit perfectly into authority figures and men of order. So he decided to play up that serious, straight-talking image that casting directors were looking for in the 1980s.
His face became a familiar sight in suspense and action productions for more than a decade. In 1986 he appeared in The Hitcher, and shortly after he took part in A Few Good Men in 1992. It was in this courtroom drama that he fully polished the image of the relentless military officer that would stay with him for the rest of his career. And Jackson has that look that doesn't need to shout to command respect.
His big break came in 1996 when he joined the cast of JAG. Playing Admiral A.J. Chegwidden not only gave him financial stability but also made him a recognizable face around the world. He appeared in 188 episodes over eight consecutive seasons. But Jackson decided to leave the show in 2004 to spend more time with his family and step away from the relentless pace of weekly television.
No one expected him to return to the same character thirteen years later.
After leaving the military legal drama, the actor kept working but at a lower intensity. Between 2008 and 2013, he had recurring appearances in Bones as Sam Cullen. In 2017 he appeared in the film Gifted alongside Chris Evans, proving he could still bring dramatic weight to big-budget productions without needing to wear admiral's stripes.
That same year, CBS called him back to reprise his most famous role. Between 2017 and 2019, Jackson appeared in several episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles, once again playing Chegwidden. It was a strategic move to connect both shows and attract the original series' old audience. Nine episodes was the total of his involvement in this return to Donald P. Bellisario's television universe.
His last recorded appearance in this production came in the episode titled Goodbye, Vietnam, originally aired in April 2018.
