Ksenia Solo was born in Riga in 1987 into a family of Baltic artists who saw the stage as a natural ecosystem. Her destiny seemed written in ballet shoes, but a back injury halted that momentum before she turned fourteen. That physical setback led her to turn to acting in Toronto, the city where her family had settled in search of new opportunities.
In 2004, she began to stand out on the series Renegadepress.com, playing Zoey Jones. It was a five-year job that earned her two consecutive Gemini Awards in Canada. That formative period taught her that her petite frame concealed a dramatic intimidation power rare among actresses of her generation.
There was no turning back.
Her dance training was not wasted, as it helped her build characters through complete control of the body. In 2010, Darren Aronofsky chose her for Black Swan, where she played Veronica, the direct rival of Mila Kunis's character. The film grossed 329 million dollars and put her on the radar of the major Los Angeles studios.
That same year, 2010, she accepted the role of Kenzi on the series Lost Girl. What seemed on paper like a supporting comic relief character ended up becoming the emotional heart of the storyline over five seasons. Her chemistry with Anna Silk was the engine of a show that built a very active fan base on social media.
And the audience responded.
But her success in fantasy did not keep her in a single genre. In 2015, she joined the cast of Orphan Black to bring Shay Davydov to life, a character who explored identity and human relationships far from special effects. That shoot overlapped with her role in Turn: Washington’s Spies, where she played Peggy Shippen for three consecutive seasons.
In that AMC period drama, she proved she could handle dense dialogue and period costumes with the same ease as a modern leather jacket. Her portrayal of Shippen is considered by critics to be one of the pillars of the series until its finale in 2017.
The film industry often typecasts actors based on their looks, but Solo avoided that path by seeking out independent projects. In 2016, she starred in Pet alongside Dominic Monaghan, a claustrophobic psychological thriller that made no commercial concessions. It was a risky bet that succeeded at genre film festivals.
In 2019, she joined the History Channel's Project Blue Book to play Susie Miller. The series explored UFO sightings in the 1950s, and she brought a necessary ambiguity to a plot full of espionage and government secrets. The shoot took place mainly in Vancouver under the executive production of Robert Zemeckis.
Off camera, she has directed music videos such as Still Here for Craig Stickland. This behind-the-camera work reflects a need to control the storytelling process from start to finish. She doesn't just wait for calls from her agent, because she prefers to get involved in the technical nuts and bolts of her projects.
In 2017, she shot the film Tulipani, Love, Honour and a Bicycle in Italy, directed by Mike van Diem.
