The weight of a risky bet

Minnie Driver gained ten pounds to star in Circle of Friends in 1995. It was her first major breakthrough. The young Londoner, educated at expensive boarding schools, didn't fit the mold of the conventional Hollywood star. And that was precisely her greatest competitive advantage throughout the 1990s.

Nobody expected a supporting actress to overshadow the leads.

But she did. Her performance as Benny Hogan opened the doors of major studios in Los Angeles. In 1997, the project that would define her public image for years arrived. It was Good Will Hunting. For her role as Skylar, she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She was paid only 5,000 dollars for that job, a ridiculous figure compared with the millions the film earned at the box office.

The tabloids went after her after her breakup with Matt Damon. The actor announced the end of the relationship on Oprah Winfrey's show before telling her. Driver handled the public scrutiny with a mix of sarcasm and distance. So she decided her career would not depend on tabloid covers.

In 1997, she also appeared in What If God Were the Sun?. That dark comedy alongside John Cusack showed her talent for fast pacing and sharp dialogue. She wasn't looking to be America's sweetheart. She preferred flawed or outright unlikable characters.

The television and music refuge

The industry tried to typecast her in soulless blockbusters. She appeared in Hard Rain in 1998, a critical and box office disaster that taught her the dangers of inflated budgets. Driver always felt more at home in the mud of independent filmmaking. In 2000, she voiced Jane in Disney's version of Tarzan and launched her career as a professional singer.

She released her first studio album, Everything I've Got in My Pocket, in 2004. It wasn't the whim of a bored actress. The music reviews were surprisingly positive. She managed to balance her two sides with reasonable success (though movies still paid the bills at her Malibu home).

In 2007, she found on television the freedom that movies denied her. She starred in The Riches opposite Eddie Izzard. She played Dahlia Malloy, a pill-addicted woman who belonged to a family of nomadic con artists. The show was canceled after two seasons due to the Hollywood writers' strike, but it earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.

And the bet on the small screen paid off.

In the following years, she alternated appearances in shows like Modern Family and Will & Grace with more personal projects. She never stopped working. In 2014, she starred in the comedy About a Boy, based on the Nick Hornby novel. There she showed she could carry a family sitcom without losing her essence as a character actress.

Maturity and a return to genre films

Driver has never hidden her contempt for ageism in the industry. In 2021, she published her memoir titled Managing Expectations. In the book, she recounts with brutal honesty the abuse and absurd situations she experienced on film sets during her youth. But the text doesn't seek the reader's sympathy. It is a dry analysis of survival in a hostile environment.

In 2024, she joined the cast of The Beekeeper, a pure action film in which she plays the CIA director. It's a brief but commanding role. That same year, she appeared in the second season of The Serpent Queen as Queen Elizabeth I. Her performance stands out for its clever use of silence and her gaze.

The actress has kept her podcast Minnie Questions active since 2021. In this show, she interviews public figures using a strict format of seven fixed questions. The show surpassed one hundred episodes in 2023 and has become her main channel for direct communication with the public.

Driver currently lives in a luxury prefab home she helped design herself. In 2024, her international projects were mainly produced in the United Kingdom. Her contract for the series about the Queen of France included a six-month exclusivity clause during filming in Europe.
