"Nothing bonds people like a lousy summer job"

Summer of 1987. James Brennan has just graduated from college and has his plans ready: travel through Europe and then start a master's program with an eye on journalism. But back home in Pittsburgh, money is tight because his father has lost his job. With no means to pay for the trip or his studies, James takes the only job he can find at Adventureland, a run-down amusement park in his city, where he runs the carnival games. There he runs into his childhood friend Tommy Frigo, who already works at the park. Greg Mottola wrote and directed the movie, and Jesse Eisenberg plays James.

Trivia about Adventureland

Most of the scenes were shot at Kennywood, a historic park in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, which was heavily altered to look run-down.

Filming took place in the middle of winter, even though the story is set in summer, so the crews had to hide the snow. For some interior shots, extras were paid to stand outside, next to windows and doors, and block the snow from view.

In early drafts of the script, Neil Young took the place of Lou Reed as the musician whom the Ryan Reynolds character plays with. Those drafts also used Young's songs in key scenes.

41 songs were licensed for the movie, but the official soundtrack includes 14. Almost all of them are from the 1980s, with a few tracks from the late 1960s and early 1970s.

High Times magazine named Adventureland Stoner Movie of the Year for 2009, and also gave Kristen Stewart an award, partly for their performance in the film.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the movie three out of four stars and admitted he was surprised by how much he admired Kristen Stewart, who was below their usual level in Twilight.

Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader were on set for only four days because of their commitments to "Saturday Night Live," so all of their scenes were squeezed into a very tight schedule.

Greg Mottola based the movie on the Adventureland park in Farmingdale, New York, where he worked in the 1980s, but he decided not to shoot there because it had been renovated too much since then.
