The world disappears. Fear survives.

Lieutenant Payton, played by Dennis Quaid, wakes up in a hibernation chamber inside a spaceship. He doesn't know who he is, what he's doing there or what his mission was. Beside him is Corporal Bower, played by Ben Foster, just as disoriented. The two appear to be the only surviving crew members. The ship Elysium is traveling toward Tanis, an Earth-like planet that is overpopulated and short on resources. Payton wants to understand what has happened and recover his memory before making any decisions. As the two men make their way through the ship's corridors, the film, directed by Christian Alvart, raises the first question: what has happened to the other passengers?

Trivia about Pandorum

The story was originally conceived as taking place on a prison ship called Pandorum, which was transporting thousands of the most dangerous prisoners from Earth to another planet. The characters played by Antje Traue and Cung Le were inmates.

Travis Milloy planned to shoot the script as a low-budget film, shot on video in an abandoned paper factory and with unknown actors, because he believed no studio would want to make it.

The title is an invented slang term for a psychosis caused by deep space and triggered by emotional stress, which causes severe paranoia, delusions and nosebleeds.

The German Federal Film Fund contributed $6 million to the production, its second-largest outlay of 2008, behind only the $7.5 million granted to Ninja Assassin.

The film was conceived as a possible franchise. According to Travis Milloy, it was set to have a sequel and a prequel, although Impact Pictures would only greenlight more installments if the first one performed well.

Pandorum grossed $20.6 million worldwide on a budget of $33 million. The following year, its distributor, Overture Films, filed for bankruptcy.

In 2026, "Pandorum" began streaming for free with ads on Lionsgate Movies' official YouTube channel, offering a new way to watch the 2009 film.

Filming took place in August 2008 at the Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam, Germany, although some secondary sources place it more broadly in Berlin.

Quotes by Pandorum

After what I just saw, procedure just went out the fucking window.
I'm gonna fucking carve you up!
This... truly is Noah's Ark. This archive holds the world we are going to live in.
You think I survived this long trusting strangers?
I understand that it's felt like every man for himself. If we're going to get out of this... a little fucking solidarity goes a long way. We all want to survive, right?
I was younger than you when I first came onboard. Funny, I can't even remember what life was like before this flight began. It's all I have.
