In 1991, veteran CIA agent Nathan Muir (Robert Redford) arrives on the last day of his career before retiring. A call from a contact at the U.S. embassy in Hong Kong pulls him out of that routine. He learns that Tom Bishop, an agent Muir trained and considers almost a protégé, is in serious trouble. Bishop is being held in a foreign prison, accused of espionage, and his situation keeps getting worse. Muir defends the Agency's traditional methods, but the organization is already in the hands of a younger generation that seems unwilling to take risks for him. Muir must decide what to do with the time he has left as an agent and with the loyalty he owes a man he can barely help from Washington. The film is directed by Tony Scott.
