Fear is believing

Caroline is a young, skeptical nurse who has just left her job at a nursing home in New Orleans. She receives an unexpected offer: to care full time for Ben, an older man who suffered a stroke and can barely move. Her new post is an isolated plantation, a big house in the middle of the countryside where Violet, Ben's wife, also lives, a cold woman who watches every move the newcomer makes. Caroline thinks it will be a routine job, but she soon notices strange customs in the house and among its residents, and begins to wonder what lies behind its doors. The film is directed by Iain Softley and stars Kate Hudson as Caroline, and Gena Rowlands as Violet.

During the filming of a nighttime scene under a storm, Gena Rowlands slipped and broke a hand, which forced production to shut down for five weeks.

At the time, Kate Hudson's pregnancy delayed the film's principal photography by eight months.

Director Iain Softley offered John Hurt the role of Ben Devereaux, stressing that it was very important and that it had not a single line of dialogue.

In the United States, the film earned $16.1 million in its opening weekend and landed in second place at the box office.

The final aerial shot of the house was created with CGI technology. The house and the small grove are real, but the swamp surrounding it was created by the director.

While shooting in Louisiana, Kate Hudson recalled that the three cameras kept breaking down and that, at times, several of them stopped working on the same day.
