The greatest threat to our nation comes from within

In Virginia, a group of intruders breaks into an underground bunker of the National Security Agency run by agent Augustus Gibbons. He barely escapes with Toby Shavers, but the threat is far from over. Gibbons needs someone with more nerve and experience to find out who is behind the attack, and his search leads him to Darius Stone, a former U.S. Navy SEAL serving a twenty-year sentence in Leavenworth prison. Stone is the man he needs, but he is still behind bars. The film is directed by Lee Tamahori and stars Ice Cube as the new xXx agent.

Vin Diesel and Rob Cohen signed on to a sequel before the first film was released, but both later dropped out. Diesel didn't like the script.

Two scripts were prepared for the film. The one by Simon Kinberg was chosen, while the other featured a radically different plot.

According to TheWrap.com, the production budget was $87 million, but Revolution Studios spent a total of $113.1 million.

Its opening weekend brought in $12.7 million and it finished third, behind The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and The Interpreter.

The soundtrack, featuring hip hop and alternative rock, reached No. 117 on the Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the Top Soundtracks chart.

The photo in Darius Stone's file that appears when the NSA checks his profile is a picture of Ice Cube from his days in N.W.A., the group active in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The film grossed 71,410,636 dollars worldwide, of which 26,873,932 came from the United States and Canada and 44,536,704 from other markets.

Ice Cube joined the project to play Darius Stone in October 2003, according to information published at the time by Entertainment Weekly.
