Jack Mosley is a veteran New York City police detective, played by Bruce Willis. He has spent years sunk in alcohol and barely cares what the day has in store for him. After an exhausting night shift, his lieutenant assigns him a seemingly routine job: escort Eddie Bunker, a small-time thief, from the holding cell to the courthouse. Eddie must testify at 10 a.m. before a grand jury in a police corruption case, and the courthouse is sixteen blocks away. Jack doesn't want to play babysitter, but he has no choice. Eddie tries to win him over and talks about his plans: he wants to move to Seattle and open a bakery with a sister he has never met. Jack barely listens. He puts the prisoner in the back seat of his car and speeds off to cross New York in the middle of the morning rush hour.

Trivia about 16 Blocks

The film was the last one Richard Donner directed during his lifetime, and also the last acting role of his cousin Steve Kahan, a frequent collaborator of the director.

The script had a planned ending, but during filming Donner and Richard Wenk saw that there was a better option for closing the film in a different way.

According to Box Office Mojo, production costs came to about $55 million, while the film grossed $65.7 million worldwide.

On its U.S. opening, the film grossed $12.7 million and was the second-highest earner over the weekend.

Critic Wesley Morris of The Boston Globe compared the film to a remake of The Gauntlet, directed by Clint Eastwood, and criticized it for lacking originality.

In Venezuela the film was released under the title Muerte súbita, while in Argentina and Spain it was titled 16 Blocks.

To recreate Jack Mosley's limp, Bruce Willis kept a pebble in his shoe throughout the entire shoot; the film was shot in Toronto, which stood in for New York.

Richard Donner said that Millennium Films would only finance the project if it cast an actor with enough commercial appeal; Bruce Willis accepted the role after reading the script and saying he loved it.
