Synopsis of The Jinx

Robert Durst, heir to a powerful New York real estate family, is the focus of this true crime documentary. The series examines three unsolved cases: the disappearance of his wife, Kathie, in 1982; the cold-blooded murder of writer Susan Berman in 2000; and the killing and dismemberment of his neighbor Morris Black in Galveston, Texas, in 2001. Investigators follow the trail of remains found in Texas Bay, which leads them to the millionaire. To reconstruct events, the production combines interviews, news footage and security camera images, police evidence and archival material. Created by Andrew Jarecki, Marc Smerling and Zachary Stuart-Pontier, the series airs on HBO.

Trivia about The Jinx

Over several years, Durst sat with Jarecki for more than 20 hours, even though he had never before collaborated with any journalist.

Durst admired the movie All Good Things, which was inspired by his life story, and called Jarecki after its release to offer himself for an interview.

A musical saw, played by Natalia Paruz, can be heard throughout the series.

In 2015, the series won two Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards after earning six nominations, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.

The series also received the 2015 Peabody Award and the TCA Award from the Television Critics Association for outstanding achievement in movies, miniseries and specials.

The second part, announced by HBO in November 2023, consists of six episodes and premiered on April 21, 2024, with Andrew Jarecki and the original producers in charge.

The Durst family largely refused to take part in the filming and, two days before an interview published in 2015, filed a personal lawsuit against Andrew Jarecki.

The production team spent four to five years developing the first series before it aired on HBO.
