Ella Purnell was twelve years old when she landed her first professional role, in a stage musical of Oliver! in London's West End. It was not an easy road. In 2010 she made her film debut with Never Let Me Go, and her performance as the young Ruth drew attention for a maturity that didn't match her age.
The industry tends to devour those who start out so young.
In 2014 she repeated that same formula in Maleficent, playing the young version of Angelina Jolie. Two years later, in 2016, she did the same with Margot Robbie in The Legend of Tarzan. It seemed her professional destiny was inhabiting the memories of acclaimed actresses rather than building her own characters.
But the British industry took note of her ability to hold close-ups without relying on dialogue. Before turning twenty, she worked under Tim Burton in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, playing Emma Bloom. That shoot in 2016 marked her first real experience with large-scale visual effects.
Television changed the game for her in 2018 with the series Sweetbitter. Playing Tess was her first major challenge as a leading lead in a grown-up, hostile environment. But the real breakthrough came in 2021 with the premiere of Yellowjackets.
Her role as Jackie Taylor in the first season of this survival drama was a breakthrough. The series demanded constant physical exhaustion and the ability to convey terror without tipping into melodrama. And the gamble paid off.
That same year, 2021, she voiced Jinx in the animated series Arcane. Recording the dialogue stretched over months in order to capture the nuances of the character's mental instability. The production set record viewership numbers on streaming platforms worldwide.
Then came the mud.
In 2024, Purnell's career took a decisive technical leap with Fallout. The video game adaptation put her at the center of a blockbuster production with an estimated budget of 153 million dollars per season.
She played Lucy MacLean, and filming required travel to extreme locations on the Skeleton Coast in Namibia. The shoot was defined by practical effects and constant exposure to the harsh desert elements. The actress performed much of her action work herself, without stunt doubles, in hand-to-hand combat sequences.
Success did not pull her away from smaller or more experimental projects, though. In 2024 she also starred in the black comedy Sweetpea, playing a woman with murderous tendencies. The British series was shot entirely on location in the United Kingdom during the winter.
The second season of Fallout was officially confirmed in late April 2024, with production moving from New York to California to take advantage of 25 million dollar in tax incentives.
