Henry Ian Cusick was born in Trujillo, Peru, but his identity is a puzzle of borders. His mother was Peruvian and his father was Scottish. He lived in Madrid before moving to Glasgow, where the climate and the discipline of classical theater shaped his understanding of acting.
He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama but was expelled in his second year. It was a harsh blow that forced him to fend for himself at the Citizens' Theatre in Glasgow. There he learned that the stage doesn't forgive mistakes and that prestige is earned through sweat.
Glasgow was his true school of survival.
During the 1990s he focused on Shakespeare and classic European plays. His performance as Torquato Tasso earned him a special mention at the Ian Charleson awards in 1995. Those were years of vans and cold dressing rooms, when television was only a distant possibility.
In 2005, the actor was living at a friend's house in London when he got a call for a supporting role. He didn't know he would play Desmond Hume in Lost. He was only contracted for three episodes, but his chemistry with the rest of the cast forced the writers to rewrite his fate.
That ABC series became an unprecedented global phenomenon. Cusick went from being an unknown to earning an Emmy nomination for guest actor in 2006. Audiences connected with his recurring line about seeing each other in another life, and his salary increased exponentially after the second season.
And the gamble paid off.
Yet his massive success on television did not pull him away from his technical roots. While filming in Hawaii, he took the chance to observe how cameras worked and how production schedules came together. Because Henry Ian Cusick has always focused on story structure more than on makeup.
After the island's closure in 2010, the actor took on several quick projects. He appeared in the first season of Scandal in 2012, playing Stephen Finch. But he chose to leave Shonda Rhimes' series in search of roles with greater physical and dramatic weight.
In 2014, he joined the cast of The 100 to bring Marcus Kane to life. It was a grueling shoot in the forests of Vancouver that lasted seven years. There, he not only acted but also made the leap to directing in 2017 with the episode titled The Chosen from season four.
That experience behind the camera was a turning point. By 2013 he had already produced and directed his own short film titled Dress, which won the Best Film award at the Hawaii International Film Festival.
Control over the creative process interests him more than the red carpet.
In 2020 he joined the series MacGyver as Russ Taylor. It was a project that let him explore a lighter, pure-action register before CBS canceled the show in 2021. After the series ended, he moved back to Hawaii with his family to focus on independent projects.
In 2022 he starred in the film The Wind & the Reckoning, shot entirely in the islands' native language. In 2024 he lent his voice to Peet the Sockmaker in the animated series The Wingfeather Saga during its second season.
