Marshall Manesh arrived in the United States in the mid-1970s with a suitcase and few certainties. He wasn't chasing instant fame. Before stepping onto a Hollywood set, he spent years working in banking and managing gas stations in California. His entry into the industry came late but made a strong impact.
Film was not his first choice.
In 1994, James Cameron gave him a break in True Lies. That terrorist role typecast him for a decade as Arab or Persian characters. Yet he took on the challenge with an unusual dignity in an industry that often penalizes ethnicity. And so he surpassed 100 on-screen credits before turning sixty.
He worked with the Coen brothers on The Big Lebowski for 1998, playing a doctor. It was a brief appearance. For Manesh, though, the size of a role never determined his commitment on set.
In 2005, the project came along that changed how the public saw him. His role as Ranjit on How I Met Your Mother began as a one-off appearance by a limousine driver. The creators saw something special in his dry comic timing, so they kept him for the show's nine seasons, which ran until 2014.
Manesh never needed a lead role to be the center of attention.
He appeared in The Holiday in 2006 under the direction of Nancy Meyers. There he played Arthur Abbott's butler (Eli Wallach) in one of the film's most memorable subplots. His ability to convey warmth with just three lines of dialogue made him a prized supporting player for major studios.
In 2007, he joined the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. He played Captain Sri Sumbhajee, one of the pirate lords. The shoot was physically demanding, but his commanding physical presence earned respect among a cast full of global stars.
In 2014, he appeared in A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. It was a risky bet, shot in black and white and in Farsi. He played Hossein, a heroin-addicted father in a ghost town. The role showed that his dramatic range went far beyond the recurring jokes of American sitcoms.
Sometimes a tired look is all it takes.
During 2022, he appeared in the series The Old Man alongside Jeff Bridges. A year later, he guest-starred in several episodes of Cooper’s Bar, playing a character named Arash. In 2024, he joined the cast of The Chosen to bring Shmuel to life. His schedule stays full because he treats acting as a constant service to the script rather than an ego exercise.
Most of his current contracts are signed at the minimum SAG-AFTRA union rates and usually include a daily meal allowance for location shoots.
