Poorna Jagannathan kept her corporate paycheck in the advertising sector until 2016. Mornings she designed campaigns for multinational agencies, and afternoons she went to screen tests without telling her clients. When she signed the contract for a prestige production with HBO, she was still paying out of her own pocket for an office in downtown New York.
Nobody on Madison Avenue suspected a thing.
The daughter of an Indian diplomat, she was born in Tunisia in 1972 and spent her childhood moving around diplomatic postings between Pakistan, Ireland, Argentina and Brazil. In Brasília she learned Portuguese, and in Madrid or Buenos Aires she perfected a direct Spanish, before settling in the United States to study journalism at the University of Maryland. But the university classroom soon felt too small compared to the physical magnetism of New York's Actors Studio, where she trained with Elizabeth Kemp.
For a decade and a half, her professional life belonged to agencies such as Ogilvy and TBWA. It wasn't just a survival job to pay the rent in Manhattan. She even founded her own brand strategy consultancy, billing corporate clients while picking up small episodic parts in fast-paced TV shows.
In 2011 she traveled to India with the simple intention of attending a family wedding. There she met a costume designer who suggested she audition for Delhi Belly, a raunchy English-language comedy produced by Aamir Khan. Jagannathan showed up in rumpled clothes and landed the female lead without ever having set foot in Bombay's commercial circuit.
And the box office exploded.
The film grossed more than eight million dollars on a minimal budget, standing out as a transgressive oddity at the Indian box office. That commercial success didn't tie her to Bombay, because her center of gravity remained in New York and in the problems shaking the civil society of her cultural surroundings.
In December 2012, the gang rape of a young student on a bus in Delhi sparked mass protests in half a dozen Asian capitals. Jagannathan didn't want to limit herself to signing manifestos and decided to fund a testimonial play. She reached out to playwright Yaël Farber, and together they brought to life Nirbhaya, a production in which several actresses shared their own experiences of sexual violence on a bare stage.
The project made its way to the Edinburgh Festival in 2013 and took home the Fringe First and the Amnesty International award. It was two years of exhausting worldwide touring, funded partly by personal loans and crowdfunding. But theater doesn't pay the rent in Brooklyn.
The call that closed her fifteen years as an executive came in 2016 through novelist Richard Price. In the miniseries The Night Of, she played Safar Khan, the mother who watches her son get swallowed up by the American legal system after a confusing night out partying. Her restrained, almost silent performance in the face of public lynching made casting directors take definitive notes.
In 2020 Mindy Kaling offered her the role of dermatologist Nalini Vishwakumar in Never Have I Ever. Over four seasons and forty episodes, Jagannathan broke the mold of the strict immigrant mother, turning the rigidity of grief into a comedic device with a double edge.
But the real industry filter came later.
In 2024 she filmed under Jon Watts in the feature film Wolfs, sharing scenes with George Clooney and Brad Pitt under Apple Studios production. In 2025 she went straight into filming the crime comedy Deli Boys for Hulu, and formalized her joining the series Lanterns from Warner Bros Television with a contract signed for eight episodes in Atlanta.
Filming began at 6 a.m. at the Trilith Studios in Atlanta. The first unit wrapped the day with twelve usable takes and an operating cost set at twelve million dollars per episode.
