A Film by Taika Waititi

Ricky Baker is a rebellious twelve-year-old city kid who has spent his whole life bouncing from one foster home to another. He has a reputation for running away from the homes where he's placed, and the system no longer knows where to put him. His last chance is a remote farm in the middle of the New Zealand countryside, where Bella and Hector live. She welcomes him with a warmth the boy didn't expect. He, on the other hand, is a surly, solitary man who barely speaks to him and seems interested only in hunting. Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Julian Dennison and Sam Neill, the movie follows a distrustful kid who has to find his place in a home where nobody makes it easy for him.

Trivia about Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Waititi chose Julian Dennison based on earlier work the two had done together on a commercial.
The shoot lasted five weeks in locations such as the Central Plateau, Ahuroa, and the Waitākere Ranges, and almost the entire movie was filmed with a single camera.
In its opening weekend in New Zealand, it earned NZ$1,263,000, the biggest opening ever for a New Zealand film, ahead of the NZ$912,000 earned by What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? in 1999.
With US$23.2 million, it remains the highest-grossing New Zealand film, not counting international co-productions.
