It's a strange world.

Jeffrey Beaumont, a college student, returns to Lumberton, a seemingly peaceful town in North Carolina, because his father has suffered a stroke and is in the hospital. While walking home, he cuts across a grassy lot and stumbles upon a human ear. Jeffrey can't ignore the discovery. He puts it in a paper bag and takes it to the police station, where he's helped by Detective John Williams, his neighbor. The visit raises a question the young man can't stop thinking about: who lost that ear, and how is it connected to a place that, on the surface, seems calm and free of secrets.

Trivia about Blue Velvet

Helen Mirren was Lynch's first choice to play Dorothy Vallens, but the filmmaker ultimately offered the role to Isabella Rossellini after meeting her at a restaurant.
Megan Mullally played Louise Wertham, Jeffrey's college girlfriend, but her entire role was cut from the theatrical release. Those scenes were later restored for the Blu-ray.
During filming, Lynch placed speakers on the set and in the streets to play Dmitri Shostakovich's music and create the atmosphere he wanted.
Several neighbors showed up to the shoot with picnic baskets and blankets. After that incident, the police told Lynch he could no longer film in any public area of Wilmington.
