Courtney is a medical student obsessed with life after death. Before proposing anything, she makes it clear that she wants to understand what lies beyond life. She invites her classmates Jamie and Sophia to join an experiment in an unused hospital room. The idea is to use a defibrillator to stop Courtney's heart for sixty seconds while her brain activity is recorded, and then revive her. She assures them they won't be held responsible for any accident that might occur. The film is directed by Niels Arden Oplev and stars Elliot Page as Courtney, while James Norton and Kiersey Clemons play her classmates.

Trivia about Flatliners

In 2008, Michael Douglas and Stephen Susco tried to relaunch the story as a TV series. Douglas was going to produce it and Susco would write the script, but the project became a feature film in 2011.

Kiefer Sutherland announced that they would reprise their role from the original film, but in the new one they play a character with a different name and with no references to the events of the previous movie.

In its U.S. opening, the film earned 6.6 million dollars and finished fifth at the box office. That was below the 10 million dollar opening of the original 1990, not adjusted for inflation.

In her memoir Pageboy, Elliot Page described an unsafe and toxic work environment on set. According to her account, during a car scene with Kiersey Clemons, they were not given any harnesses.

During test screenings, some audience members mistook the apparitions for real ghosts, so the team added a visual explanation during the reshoots to clarify that they were hallucinations experienced by the living and the dead.

Principal photography began in early July 2016 in Toronto, mainly using Cinespace Film Studios, and wrapped on September 7 of the same year.

The film grossed 45.2 million dollars worldwide on a production budget of 19 million, with 16.9 million coming from the United States and Canada.
