Ricky Baker is a rebellious twelve-year-old city kid who has spent his whole life bouncing from one foster home to another. He has a reputation for running away from the homes where he's placed, and the system no longer knows where to put him. His last chance is a remote farm in the middle of the New Zealand countryside, where Bella and Hector live. She welcomes him with a warmth the boy didn't expect. He, on the other hand, is a surly, solitary man who barely speaks to him and seems interested only in hunting. Trivia about Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Waititi chose Julian Dennison based on earlier work the two had done together on a commercial.

The shoot lasted five weeks in locations such as the Central Plateau, Ahuroa, and the Waitākere Ranges, and almost the entire movie was filmed with a single camera.

In its opening weekend in New Zealand, it earned NZ$1,263,000, the biggest opening ever for a New Zealand film, ahead of the NZ$912,000 earned by What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? in 1999.

With US$23.2 million, it remains the highest-grossing New Zealand film, not counting international co-productions.

The budget was around NZ$4.5 million, of which NZ$2 million came from the New Zealand Film Commission.

Waititi began adapting the book in 2005 and completed several different drafts. The first ones stayed faithful to the novel, but later versions departed from it in several ways.

An unexpected snowfall of about 20 centimeters forced Taika Waititi to improvise the shoot: they set the camera on a tripod and turned the situation into a circular take with actors and made-up stunt doubles.

Access to New Zealand Army land made it possible to film areas of the North Island that, according to Waititi, had never appeared in a movie before and that few New Zealanders had seen.
