In 1876, Captain Nathan Algren is a former U.S. Army officer who lives drowning in alcohol and haunted by remorse over the campaigns against Native Americans. His former commander, Colonel Bagley, seeks him out with a job offer. The commission comes from Matsue Omura, a Japanese businessman who wants to train the newly formed Imperial Japanese Army. Its goal is to crush a rebellion by a group of samurai against the new emperor. Algren thus faces an opportunity that forces him to look again at the men he fought and the country he is about to discover. The film is directed by Edward Zwick and stars Tom Cruise.
