Ramón Sampedro, a former sailor and writer, has spent nearly thirty years bedridden, cared for by his family in a house in Galicia. An accident in his youth left him quadriplegic and cut short the life he had led before, one marked by travel. From his room, he sees only the sea, the same sea he dove into and which now serves as his only window on the world. Ramón has one clear goal: to end his life and win legal recognition of that right. To achieve it, he needs legal support, and lawyer Julia offers to take up his cause. At the same time, Rosa, a neighbor from the village, approaches him, hoping to show him that his life is still worth living. Directed by Alejandro Amenábar, the film stars Javier Bardem in the lead role and opens with this clash between Ramón's will and the people who want him to change his mind.
