Erin Daniels never expected a fictional character to end up with a real obituary in the pages of the Los Angeles Times. It happened in 2006 when Dana Fairbanks, the professional tennis player she played in The L Word, died of breast cancer on screen. That writers' decision sparked protests in the streets and a flood of thank-you letters that the actress still keeps in cardboard boxes.
She was born in St. Louis in 1973 under the name Erin Cohen. She grew up in a Jewish family where architecture and social work were the pillars, but she preferred to study art history at Vassar. After graduating, she moved to New York to hone her craft in theater before Hollywood came calling for roles that demanded a very specific physical presence.
She signed her first major film contract for One Hour Photo in 2002.
In that film, she shared scenes with Robin Williams and proved she could hold her own against major stars without flinching. But television is what changed her pace of life. During the first three seasons of the Showtime series, she had to train four hours a day on tennis courts so her serves would look convincing on camera.
And the gamble paid off.
Before becoming the public face of the fight against cancer on television, she worked in pure genre cinema. In 2003, she appeared in House of 1000 Corpses under the direction of Rob Zombie. It was a chaotic, grimy shoot that had little to do with the glamour of the red carpets she would walk years later. Daniels has always preferred fieldwork to excessive makeup.
The departure of her most famous character was traumatic for audiences but liberating for her career. In 2009, designer Tom Ford cast her in his directing debut, A Single Man. It was a brief role (playing Bankhead), but enough for the industry to see that her range fit aesthetically driven productions with a slow, measured pace.
But the phone doesn't always ring with auteur scripts. After that critically acclaimed success, she took on procedurals like CSI or Rizzoli & Isles to keep the bills under control. In 2013, Sofia Coppola gave her a small role in The Bling Ring, where she played Shannon's mother. It was a supporting part in a film about obsession with other people's fame, something she has always tried to avoid in her private life.
It was a reality check.
Daniels married producer Chris Uettwiller in 2009 and had two children before divorcing in 2019. During those years, she cut back on her workload to focus on raising her kids and on voice-over projects that didn't require months away from home. Her return to the front lines was therefore gradual and very selective.
In 2020, she appeared in the series Animal Kingdom, playing Linda. Her appearance was a reminder that restrained acting remains her greatest weapon. She doesn't need big gestures to convey authority or weary resignation. Daniels belongs to that breed of actresses who prefer listening to talking in ensemble scenes.
She briefly returned to the universe that made her famous in 2022. She appeared in an episode of The L Word: Generation Q during a dream sequence that closed the circle with her character Dana Fairbanks sixteen years after her fictional death. It was a production move designed to placate the franchise's most devoted longtime fans.
In 2024, she maintains a residence in Los Angeles focused on independent production.
Her career isn't measured in trophies but in staying power in an industry that often writes off women once they hit their forties. She has gotten past that slump through diversification and control of her own public image. Sometimes success simply means continuing to work after the main spotlights go dark.
The actress legally changed her surname to Daniels on her agent's suggestion after finding that Cohen didn't work on casting lists in 1999.
