Mike McDermott studies law in New York, but he is also a rounder, a card player who almost never loses. His best friend, Les Murphy, known to everyone as Worm, has just been released from prison and discovers he still owes a considerable sum of money to a dangerous criminal. Mike knows the only quick way to raise that amount is to sit down and play in the city's underground games. Despite warnings from his girlfriend Jo and his mentor from college, he decides to return to the tables. His goal is to help Worm get out of trouble. To do it, he will have to face some of the most dangerous players in the city, including a man known as Teddy KGB.
