A Breath of Vintage Fresh Air

Hollywood, 1927. George Valentin is one of the great stars of silent cinema, and he attends the premiere of his latest film, A Russian Affair, where he poses for photographers. A young woman named Peppy Miller accidentally bumps into him while trying to retrieve her purse. Valentin takes the mishap in good humor and pulls her in front of the cameras beside him. The next day, Peppy appears on the front page of Variety with a headline asking who she is, and she suddenly becomes a name everyone wants to know. Valentin, used to being the center of attention, watches his world begin to change as audiences turn away from silent films and become interested in movies with sound.

Trivia about The Artist

Although it is presented in black and white, the film was shot in color by director of photography Guillaume Schiffman, and all of its technical details were calibrated to imitate the silent cinema of the era.
To recreate the slightly faster pace of silent films from the 1920s, the film was shot at 22 frames per second, instead of the usual 24.
It was the first film that was neither American nor British to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Jean Dujardin became the first French actor to win the award for Best Actor.
The production cost €13.47 million, financed by La Petite Reine and ARP Sélection with co-production support from Studio 37 and France 3 Cinéma.

Quotes by The Artist

  • I won't talk! I won't say a word!
  • People are tired of old actors mugging at camera to be understood. Out with the old, in with the new. Make way for the young! That's life!
  • We have to talk, George. Why do you refuse to talk?
  • PLEASE BE BE SILENT BEHIND THE SCREEN.
  • If that's the future you can have it!
  • There's one thing we could try. Trust me.
