Mozhan Marnò was born in Los Angeles, but her mind was always somewhere else. She studied Comparative Literature at Barnard and later refined her craft at the Yale School of Drama. She is not the typical actress who makes it to Hollywood through a lucky break at a coffee shop. Her training is academic, and it shows in how she chews on every line.
She spoke Farsi at home. That cultural duality allowed her to move between worlds without losing her bearings. In 2008 she starred in The Stoning of Soraya M. and the impact was immediate. She played a woman wrongfully condemned in an Iranian village. The shoot was grueling under the Jordanian sun. The script demanded absolute physical restraint that few young actors know how to handle.
And the gamble paid off.
That role opened the doors of an industry that often typecasts actors of Middle Eastern origin. But Marnò avoided the traps of stereotype thanks to her command of five different languages. She speaks French, German and Spanish in addition to her native tongues. That linguistic ability gives her a competitive edge in the international casts of major networks.
In 2014, she joined the world of House of Cards as Ayla Sayyad. That sharp-tongued journalist gave her the platform she needed to move on to The Blacklist that same year. She played Agent Samar Navabi for five full seasons. It was her most visible role for a general audience and allowed her to explore an action register she had never tried before.
She left the series in 2019 by her own decision. She wanted new challenges and did not want to settle into the comfort of a steady paycheck on network television. Marnò isn't chasing easy fame. She prefers projects where the script carries more weight than special effects or car chases.
No one expected a drama actress to end up writing comedy.
But her creative side goes far beyond standing in front of a camera. In 2011, she wrote and directed her own short film titled Incoming. It screened at several festivals and showed that she has an eye for visual composition. She also writes for the stage. Her play When the Lights Went Out premiered in New York in 2013 and was about the great blackout the city suffered years earlier.
In 2022 she appeared in the miniseries Pam & Tommy as Gail Chwatsky. It was a complete change of style (teased hair and nineties aesthetics) to tell the story of the first viral video in history. That same year she worked on Fleishman Is in Trouble for FX. In this production she played Nahid and shared scenes with Jesse Eisenberg and Claire Danes.
But theater is her real refuge.
Marnò remains connected to the New York scene whenever her TV contracts allow. Her working process is almost scientific. Before filming, she reads the script dozens of times and notes every intention in the margins. She doesn't improvise unless it's strictly necessary. She prefers to arrive on set with the character's structure perfectly designed in her head.
In 2022, she shot her scenes for the series Class of ’09 produced by FX on Hulu. Her contract stipulated a tight shooting schedule to accommodate her commitments on the East Coast. Filming wrapped without any notable technical delays in the hair and wardrobe departments.
