In 1939, shortly before World War II, English aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) travels halfway around the world to northern Australia. Her goal is to force her husband to sell Faraway Downs, a cattle station roughly the size of Belgium that is struggling financially. Baz Luhrmann directs the film, which places her in a harsh land far removed from her world of drawing rooms and etiquette. To reach the property, her husband has arranged for her to be escorted by Drover (Hugh Jackman), an independent cattleman as rough as she is refined, who is reluctant to take on the job. From the very start, the journey becomes a battle of wills between two people who can't stand each other and must depend on one another to survive a land that shows no mercy.

Trivia about Australia

After Russell Crowe left the project, Luhrmann replaced the actor with Hugh Jackman in June 2006, when the production already had a shooting date set for September of that year.
During filming in Kununurra, the Faraway Downs set was turned to mud by torrential rains, forcing a halt to production and a return to Sydney to shoot interior scenes.
Catherine Martin designed a red Chinese qipao printed with chrysanthemums for Kidman's character, one of the film's key costume pieces, which earned her an Oscar nomination.
Luhrmann hired singer Rolf Harris to play the wobble board on the film's opening credits music.

Quotes by Australia

  • Just because it is, doesn't mean it should be.
  • Most people like to own things. You know, land, luggage, other people. Makes them feel secure. But all that can be taken away. And in the end, the only thing you really own is your story. Just tryin' to live a good one.
  • Nullah: When Mrs. Boss first come to this land, she look but she not see. Now, she got her eye open for the first time.
  • There's only one thing cattle fear more than a man on a horse, and that's a man standing on his own two feet, staring him right between the eyes.
  • Magarri: If you've got no love in your heart, you've got nothing... No dreaming, not story, nothing.
