The film is set during the Battle of Iwo Jima, in 1945, near the end of World War II. Directed by Clint Eastwood, it follows a group of American Marines, starring Ryan Phillippe, Adam Beach, Jesse Bradford and Jamie Bell. After training at Camp Tarawa in Hawaii, the 28th Marine Regiment sets sail for the island with a clear objective: to invade it. For three days, the Navy bombards the Japanese positions it suspects are on the ground. The soldiers prepare for the landing, which must secure a beachhead on February 19, 1945, in territory heavily defended.

This isn't just any island to them. This isn't Tarawa, Guam, Tinian, or Saipan. This is Japanese soil, sacred ground. Twelve thousand Japanese defenders in eight square miles, they will not leave politely, gentlemen! It's up to us to convince them.
U.S. Marines: [first lines] Corpsman! Corpsman! Corpsman! Corpsman! For God sakes, corpsman! Corpsman! Corpsman!
President Harry S. Truman: Being an Indian, you are a truer American than any of us. Bet your people are proud to see you wear that uniform.
