He was paid to forget a past that now determines the future.

In the near future, Michael Jennings is a reverse engineer who analyzes his clients' competitors' technology and recreates it with improvements. To protect the intellectual property of those who hire him, and his own, he undergoes memory wipes that erase everything he has learned on each job. His friend Shorty, played by Paul Giamatti, accompanies him through the process. One day, his former college roommate, James Rethrick, CEO of the tech company Allcom, offers him a three-year contract. Jennings would have to live on the company's campus and would be paid in company stock. Directed by John Woo and starring Ben Affleck, the film kicks off with that offer.

Trivia about Paycheck

Woo includes several of his signature touches in the film, such as two gunfights at pistol point, a dove, and a birdcage similar to the one in Hard Boiled (1992).

Matt Damon turned down the role of Michael Jennings because he did not want to make another movie about memory loss. Before Woo, Brett Ratner was in talks to direct it.

Woo wanted to make a film in the style of Alfred Hitchcock, focused on suspense rather than guns, but according to him the script was not written that way.

Paycheck was shot entirely in Vancouver, which doubles for Seattle in the story, and the crew occupied Vancouver Film Studios for the four months of filming.

Ben Affleck won a Razzie for Worst Actor for Paycheck, but when he accepted it on Larry King Live he broke the trophy, which was later sold on eBay.

Ben Affleck earned approximately $15 million for “Paycheck,” the largest sum he had received for a film until then; when people asked him why he accepted, he would say the answer was in the title.

John Woo did not want to include his usual three-way shootout, but Affleck asked him to keep it because he admired “The Killer” and “Hard Boiled”; in the end, the scene made it into the film.

The film grossed 117,248,958 dollars worldwide against an estimated budget of 60 million; in the United States and Canada, it earned 53,790,451 dollars.
