At the end of his journey, his real adventure begins.

Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountaineer, is part of an expedition led by Peter Aufschnaiter that aims to conquer Nanga Parbat on behalf of Nazi Germany. The mountain resists, and the group descends without having accomplished its mission. During the descent, World War II breaks out, and British soldiers stationed in India capture the expedition members. All of them end up in a prisoner-of-war camp in Dehradun, at the foot of the Himalayas, where life in captivity takes the place of the expedition. Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Brad Pitt plays Harrer and David Thewlis plays Aufschnaiter.

Trivia about Seven Years in Tibet

After China pressured the Indian government, which threatened to cut power to the set and refused to allow a bank account to be opened, the shoot moved from Ladakh to Argentina.

According to the director, two crews secretly shot about 20 minutes of footage in Tibet, something that was confirmed after the premiere.

Aconcagua Provincial Park and Penitentes, in Argentina, served as the Himalayan landscape during the shoot.

Critic Roger Ebert argued that the casting of Pitt and Thewlis should have been swapped, because the film told the story from the wrong character's point of view.

The movie grossed approximately 131.5 million dollars worldwide, including 37.96 million in the United States and Canada and 93.5 million in other markets.

China condemned the film for its portrayal of Chinese soldiers and banned Brad Pitt, David Thewlis and Jean-Jacques Annaud from entering the country.

John Williams received Golden Globe and Grammy nominations for the film's score, which also won awards from the Guild Film Award and the Political Film Society.

The film had its commercial release in the United States and Canada on just three screens, where it earned 46,130 dollars over its first two days before expanding its distribution.
