In an instant, the world changed forever.

A nameless father and his young son travel through a world devastated by a catastrophe of unknown origin. Buildings and houses lie in ruins, the forests have burned, and gray clouds cover the sky, while cold and darkness engulf everything. The two make their way down a road toward the coast, hoping to find a safe place to take shelter. Along the way they must search for food and supplies among the remains of what once was normal life, and every stop carries a risk. The father tries to protect the boy while facing a reality that allows no mistakes. The film, directed by John Hillcoat, stars Viggo Mortensen as the father and Kodi Smit-McPhee as the son.

Trivia about The Road

Most of the filming took place on the abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike, a stretch of highway left empty between Hustontown and Breezewood.
Filming also took place at Conneaut Lake Park, two months after its Dreamland ballroom was destroyed by fire.
Hillcoat noted that the Coca-Cola references were already in the novel, but the company was reluctant to have its product appear in the film.
Reportedly, the release was delayed at the last minute to make it an Oscar contender, and the change pushed Nine to December.

Quotes by The Road

  • I told the boy when you dream about bad things happening, it means you're still fighting and you're still alive. It's when you start to dream about good things that you should start to worry.
  • [to the boy] I will kill anyone who touches you. Because that's my job.
  • If I were God, I would have made the world just so and no different. And so I have you... I have you.
