Synopsis of Archive 81

Dan is an archivist who restores damaged video tapes. A mysterious company hires him to recover the recordings of Melody Pendras, a graduate student who filmed a documentary about an apartment building. The fire that destroyed the building left the tapes in poor condition. Dan works on them in the present, while the images show Melody filming in 1994. He soon notices that the job is not what it seems. He finds himself in the middle of a mystery surrounding a disappearance and a cult, and begins to wonder what lies behind those images. Created by Rebecca Sonnenshine for Netflix, the series stars Mamoudou Athie and Dina Shihabi.

Trivia about Archive 81

Upon its premiere, the series entered Nielsen's streaming chart at number seven and reached number two in its second week.

Between January 9 and January 30, the series accumulated 128.47 million viewing hours worldwide, according to Netflix Top 10s.

Rebecca Thomas was partly in charge of filming in Pittsburgh and directed half of the series.

In January 2022, it was reported that Michael Clear, Rebecca Thomas and Antoine Douaihy were also serving as executive producers.

Dina Shihabi landed the role of Melody Pendras after three failed casting calls in which other actors had previously been selected.

To create the soundtrack, the composers recorded sounds of everyday objects, ritual chants, cult members' voices, a piano and a jazz piece before filming began.

Rebecca Sonnenshine explained that the adaptation was shot on high-sensitivity film and that one of the cameras used appears within the series itself.

Netflix canceled "Archive 81" after a single season on March 24, 2022, even though Sonnenshine had already started drafting initial ideas for a second season.
