Synopsis of Fawlty Towers

Basil Fawlty runs a small hotel in Torquay, on the Devon coast in England, with his wife, Sybil. He has a bad temper and a sharp tongue, and wants to give his establishment some class. However, every day brings mistakes, both his own and others', that get in the way: demanding guests, employees who don't help, and small disasters that pile up. Manuel, a waiter who barely speaks English, works in the service, along with Polly, the employee who usually gets the boss out of trouble. The series, which premiered in 1975, follows Basil's efforts to keep the business afloat while his nerves are worn down by guests and setbacks. Created by John Cleese and Connie Booth, it airs on BBC Two, and Cleese plays the lead.

Trivia about Fawlty Towers

Cleese earned £6,000 for 43 weeks of work and supplemented his income with TV commercials, as he himself explained.
The first script Cleese and Booth wrote was called a disaster by a BBC executive, as Cleese himself recalled years later.
Although the series is set in Torquay, no scenes were filmed in southwest England. The exterior shots were recorded at the Wooburn Grange Country Club in Buckinghamshire.
Some episodes took four months to complete and needed up to 10 drafts, because Cleese and Booth wanted every script to be perfect.
Director John Howard Davies asked the Aeolian Quartet to deliberately play the theme music badly, although in the end they didn't.
In the version broadcast in Spain, the character Manuel was changed to Italian.
The behavior of the real owner of a Torquay hotel where the Monty Python team stayed inspired Cleese. A backpack he suspected contained a bomb turned out to hold an alarm clock.
Graham Linehan cited the series' farcical elements as an influence on Father Ted, a comedy he wrote himself.
