Synopsis of Unorthodox

Esty Schwartz, a 19-year-old woman, is trapped in an arranged marriage within the Satmar Hasidic community of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She decides to flee to Berlin, where her mother, who has been absent since her childhood, lives, and there she tries to build a secular life far from everything she has known. Soon she befriends a group of music students from different countries and considers enrolling in the conservatory. The series follows her search for a sense of self and the challenges of breaking away from the community she grew up in. Created by Anna Winger and Alexa Karolinski, it streams on Netflix and stars Shira Haas.

Trivia about Unorthodox

It's Netflix's first series performed mainly in Yiddish, and it consists of four episodes of about 55 minutes each.
Eli Rosen, an actor and Yiddish specialist, was one of the first to be hired. He translated the scripts, coached the actors and played the rabbi.
Jeff Wilbusch was the only one of the four lead actors who was a native Yiddish speaker from the Satmar community.
The production team made two three-day research trips to Williamsburg, where they toured buildings and met with the Satmar community.
The writers departed from Deborah Feldman's real life and invented sequences set in Berlin, although the flashbacks are based on her book.
The series was nominated for eight Emmy categories and won two. Maria Schrader took home the award for directing, the first for a German production.
Three days after its release, the series had a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 18 reviews.
To recreate the wedding, more than 200 extras were hired, and some men were selected solely for their beards; filming took place during a heat wave in a Palestinian hall in Berlin.
