A man who calls himself Prot checks into the Manhattan Psychiatric Institute after claiming he is an alien from K-PAX, a planet 1,000 light-years away in the constellation Lyra. He is treated by Dr. Mark Powell, a psychiatrist convinced that the patient's delusions can be cured and determined to treat them. Kevin Spacey plays Prot, and Jeff Bridges plays the doctor. Directed by Iain Softley, the film raises a question from the outset that affects both of them: is the patient delusional, or is he telling the truth? Powell has a method and a firm conviction, and the clash between the doctor and his patient becomes the heart of the story.

Will Smith was offered the role of Prot. Kevin Spacey, who was originally set to play Dr. Mark Powell, ended up taking the role of Prot instead.

With a budget of $68 million, K-PAX grossed 65,001,485 worldwide, making it a box office disappointment.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film three out of four stars in his review.

Iain Softley said that Jeff Bridges reviewed takes through video playback during filming to assess their performance and explore alternative approaches.

The director brought in psychiatric consultants from the early script development stage through costume design, makeup, casting, and the patients' performances.

The film was accused of plagiarizing "Man Facing Southeast" (1986) by Eliseo Subiela. The lawsuit filed in 2001 was later dropped due to the Argentine director's lack of funds to continue the legal battle.

Universal included a twelve-minute promotional documentary about the making of the film on the collector's edition DVD, along with a commentary by director Iain Softley.
