The man beyond the myth.

Year 1947. Sherlock Holmes, now 93 years old, has long since retired from detective work and lives in a country house in Sussex, in a remote village in the English countryside. He is looked after by Mrs. Munro, his housekeeper, and Roger, her young son. Holmes begins to lose his memory, and each day it becomes harder for him to recall the details of his life. He wants to put his last case, that of the Lady in Grey, down on paper, because he disagrees with the version published by Watson, whom he considers unfaithful to the truth. To do so, he relies on Roger while fighting his senility and the memories that slip away from him. Bill Condon directs, and Holmes is played by Ian McKellen.

Trivia about Mr. Holmes

Nicholas Rowe, who played Holmes in Young Sherlock Holmes (1985), has a cameo in the film. He appears in a sequence that parodies the Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone.
To recreate the streets of Japan, the crew shot at The Historic Dockyard Chatham, a former shipyard that stood in for a Japanese setting.
The estate of Arthur Conan Doyle sued the film's creators on May 21, 2015 for unauthorized copying of protected stories. The parties reached an out-of-court settlement before the U.S. release.
On an estimated budget of $10 million, the film grossed a total of $29.4 million worldwide.
