Synopsis of The Flintstones

Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble are neighbors and best friends in Bedrock, a Stone Age town that resembles mid-20th-century American suburbs. Fred works in a quarry and shares his life with Wilma, while Barney is married to Betty. The families live in modern homes with prehistoric animals as appliances, and they get around in foot-powered logmobiles, log cars with stone wheels. Dinosaurs and other extinct animals coexist with humans. Fred and Barney embark on schemes such as camping trips, barbecues or bowling nights, and their ideas rarely work out. Their wives have to put up with them and, deep down, keep Barney's partnership with Fred going. The series, created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, aired on ABC.

Trivia about The Flintstones

ABC aired the series only in black and white during its first two seasons. Starting with the third season, in 1962, the network broadcast it in color, even though it had been produced in color for its entire run.
In 1961, The Flintstones became the first animated series nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, although it lost to The Jack Benny Program.
The melody of the theme "Meet the Flintstones" comes from a section of the B section of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 17, composed in 1801/02.
William Hanna considered The Honeymooners one of the best sitcoms on television, and that series was one of the inspirations for The Flintstones.
Before settling on its final title, the series was developed as "The Flagstones" and briefly renamed "The Gladstones" after a possible confusion with the characters of the comic strip "Hi and Lois" was noticed.
The production reached 166 episodes between 1960 and 1966, a record for an animated series broadcast in prime time until The Simpsons surpassed it in 1997.
Mel Blanc, the voice of Barney Rubble, went back to the recording booth after a serious car accident in 1961; during his recovery, Daws Butler temporarily voiced the character in several episodes.
The project was hard to sell and needed eight weeks of daily pitches to networks and advertising agencies before ABC accepted it.
