Synopsis of Touched by an Angel

A group of angels sent by God to Earth travels through towns and cities across the United States to accompany people at a crossroads. Its lead is Monica, played by Roma Downey, a sweet, warm angel born in Northern Ireland with a weakness for mocha coffee, who has just been promoted from the search and rescue division. Her guide is Tess, played by Della Reese, a tough but loving supervisor who acts more like a mother than a boss. Each episode usually revolves around a case: a person or group facing a big problem or a difficult decision. Monica and Tess bring them messages of hope from God and offer guidance to help them make their choices. The series was created by John Masius and airs on CBS.

Trivia about Touched by an Angel

In 1996, Promised Land premiered as a spin-off following the Greene family, whom Monica met during one of her cases on the original series.

The theme song, "Walk with You," is sung by Della Reese accompanied by a gospel choir.

The first pilot, written by John Masius, was darker and less hopeful than the producers wanted, and cost the studio two million dollars.

Critic Tom Shales of The Washington Post warned that anyone with little tolerance for corny fantasy would be drowned in fairy dust within ten minutes.

In its third season, the series was one of CBS's most-watched shows, and in its sixth it became the network's ninth most-watched series, with 17,190,000 viewers.

The series' composer, Marc Lichtman, won five BMI Film & Television Awards for television music between 1997 and 2001.

After a first season with low ratings, CBS came close to canceling the series, but fan pressure through letter-writing campaigns helped secure a renewal for a second season.

Roma Downey has recently floated a possible revival with Monica as an older angel, although he noted that the deaths of Della Reese and John Dye would make it difficult to bring the series back.
